Think of the now ubiquitous compact fluorescent light bulb: they’re boring, utilitarian, even ugly. Sure, the little spiral bulbs save energy, but they’re something most people want to hide behind a shade or fixture. Plumen, a sexy new CFL bulb with a unique sculptural shape, challenges all that, inviting us to make the bulb itself the centrepiece. Hulger, the designers of the bulb, have created a hive-like lighting installation that does just that, bridging the connection between everyday object, art, and function. Now, if only the Plumen came in a dimmable model . . .
