Good design can do much more than just present an aesthetic. At least that’s what the organizers of South Africa’s Eco Design Initiative endeavoured to prove. A sustainable design competition and international skills exchange, the program showcases the work of up-and-coming designers in Cape Town and sets out to solve pressing problems in the local community. The organizers see sustainability as being about “social, environmental, and economic well being.” I like their inclusive understanding of sustainable design—that it can be a tool to solve everyday problems.
